Universities across the U.S. have announced hiring freezes due to the risk of federal funding cuts under President Donald Trump’s administration. Public and private institutions, from Harvard to the University of Washington, are among those pausing hiring. University leaders have cited financial uncertainties due to new federal policies. The Trump administration’s cuts to grants from the National Institutes of Health has jeopardized hundreds of millions in federal funding for research universities. Some have announced layoffs. Johns Hopkins University said Thursday it is eliminating more than 2,200 workers because of a loss of funding from USAID.
